Mini Biography
Born to Mir Taj Muhammad Khan and Lateef Fatima in New Delhi, India, his mother always believed that her son was destined to be a great actor, often citing the resemblance between Khan and Dilip Kumar, another Bollywood legend. His name literally translates into Face of the King.
Born and brought up in Delhi, he was a brilliant student and an all-rounder. At St. Columba's School, he won the prestigious Sword of Honour. He was also the captain of his football, hockey, and cricket teams all at the same time. After sustaining a football injury, he started to consider acting as a career. He graduated with honours in economics from Hansraj College and did his master's in mass communications from Jamia Millia Islamia.
Khan then went on to study theater under the reputed Barry John, whom he credits for carving out the actor inside him, but his mentor considers his pupil as being solely responsible for his greatness and glory, citing Shahrukh to have the perfect combination of talent, perseverance, belief in yourself, a never-give-up-attitude and of course, a bit of luck--factors needed for success.
Shahrukh began his journey by landing the lead role of a commando in 1988 drama series "Fauji" (1988). He was much applauded for his work and soon became the heartthrob of teenage girls, bagging roles in other serials such as "Circus" (1989) and _"Dil Dariya" (????)_, the former was delayed because of various reasons. He also had a minor role in a made-for-television film called In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones (1989) (TV).
His big screen debut came in the form of Deewana (1992), in which he acted alongside the then-top actress of Bollywood, Divya Bharti, and won the prestigious Filmfare award for best debut actor--male. He also starred earlier in a small role in Dil Aashna Hai (...The Heart Knows) (1992). This was followed by another hit, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992).
After a few more films that did average or less at the box office, Khan made the unique choice against all advice to opt for villainous roles and played obsessive, somewhat psychotic characters in Darr (1993) and Baazigar (1993). To everyone's surprise, the films were massive hits and Shahrukh earned his first best actor award, and was also nominated in the villainous role category. His acting was applauded by all in the Indian film industry and carved a niche for the future king. The same year, he bagged the Critics Award for best performance in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1993), a film he often recalls as among his favourites.
A series of hits followed to what would be remembered as one of Khan's most iconic performances, a film that is arguably India's biggest blockbuster and truly complete with the very best of drama, comedy, romance, thrills, and a bit of action. The epic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) was released on 20th October 1995 and, as of 2011, was still showing in a Mumbai theatre, thus being the longest-running initial release in cinema history. Coincidentally, Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise was the initial choice as the main lead, but the role went to Shahrukh who is now nicknamed 'Tom Cruise of India'.
Khan has come a long way since then, with a string of hits under his belt, which include some of Bollywood's biggest in both national and international markets, namely Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001), Devdas (2002/I), Swades (2004), Chak De India! (2007), Om Shanti Om (2007), My Name Is Khan (2010), Ra.One (2011), and Don 2 (2011), made him the undisputed megastar of India with a record number of best actor trophies and numerous power awards.
His fame does not stop there: following the release of his films overseas, he has been credited as the world's biggest movie star and was named among the 50 most powerful people by "Newsweek."
Even with all the success and boasting, and a statue among the elite in Madame Tussaud's, he is quoted as being one of the most humble and down-to-earth personalities, although his wit is unmatched by even the best in the business. This led to him being a host of many television programmes, game shows, and award functions, including India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"
The king is an active philanthropist, funding numerous humanitarian projects and charities as well as being personally involved in them, although he prefers to keep this aspect out of the limelight.
His larger-than-life persona continues to win hearts all over the world with a fan following going into billions. He is the face of brands such as Pepsi, Tag Heuer, and he has a 8-billion-dirham property development that is comprised of multiple residential towers in the United Arab Emirates named after him called Shah Rukh Khan Boulevard. He co-owns two production houses--Dreamz Unlimited and Red Chilis Entertainment--and the IPL Cricket team Kolkata Knight Riders.
He is the recipient of the Padma Shri (India), l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France), the Unesco Pyramide con Marni (UNESCO), l'Étoile d'Or (by the king of Morocco), and the Chubb fellowship (Yale). Khan currently resides in his palatial beachside mansion called Mannat in Mumbai, India, with his wife Gauri Khan and two children, Aryan and Suhana.

Personal Quotes
(December 2001, about Hrithik Roshan): I wish I looked as good as he does. And I wish I danced as well as he does!
Yes, I do have a close circle of friends and I am very fortunate to have them as friends. I feel very close to them I think friends are everything in life after your family. You come across lots of people all the time but you only make very few friends and you have to be true to them otherwise what's the point in life?
I'd rather sink trying to be different, than stay afloat like everyone else.
I cannot repay my fans for what they have done for me, they have given me so much love and that love has taken me to the number 1 position where I am today, the only thing I can do for my fans is to never stop working, and to do films till the very end, it is the only way I can express my love for them.
To me, Devdas is the end of love stories. I've portrayed an obsessed lover, a nice lover, an angry lover, a romantic lover. And now I've played Devdas. For someone who doesn't even like love stories, I've played an awful lot of lovers. Personally speaking, I wouldn't see any of the romantic films I've acted in.
I'm the luckiest man in the world and I don't want to hide from the faces I'm acting for. So I don't surround myself with guards, I've never given an interview in which I've said I feel bad that I can't go shopping or I can't go to Chowpatty and eat bhelpuri without being mobbed. I'm not the kind of guy who goes out wearing dark glasses (I don't think I'm a big enough star to hide behind them, honest). I go to see movies in the cinema theatres, I go to restaurants with my family and friends even though I know people are going to disturb me there.
God has become a generic term like 'mind blowing.' It is embarrassing. I would have said that to Amitabh Bachchan, Naseeruddin Shah, Nana Patekar. I used to tell them I want to stand in the same space as you. I've told Kamal Haasan and Rajesh Khanna Saab, I just want to touch you. They are the gods of acting. When people call me God, I say, no, I'm still an angel or saint of acting. I still have a long way to go. Though I cannot ever surpass these legends I would like to be next to them.
(August 2004): Awards that ignore me are losers.
(August 2004): I'm try-sexual. I try anything that's sexual.
(August 2004): I have no competition. Every year the names I'm pitted against keep changing. You can't cream the competition, you have to kill it.
I keep hearing that our films are escapist and unreal but I find our films the most real in the world. We don't have people going up in a rocket and single-handedly blowing up a meteor. We don't have a president on Air Force One saving the world or things coming out of people's stomachs. Our fantasies and escapism are real. It's just people singing and dancing in the street. If England had won the World Cup you would have seen people singing and dancing like that.
I don't like wearing dark glasses. I'm happy with the fact that people know me. I want people to scream and shout at me, I want people to trouble me when I'm having lunch, I like six bodyguards around me. I love being a star. I find it very strange when people who are famous say they don't want to be photographed. I don't want to be photographed first thing in the morning, I don't want people peeping into my bedroom, but besides that, it's a wonderful life.
"I haven't given up smoking. I'm very clear about it, it's a personal choice. I want to cut down on it. It shouldn't be made into an issue to say, damn good or damn bad. Whether I give it up or not shouldn't be an issue." (Movie Mag, May 2006)
"I was supposed to have done Rang De Basanti (2006), the guy on the motorbike. I didn't have the dates. They were shooting in Delhi and the dates were clashing with Paheli." (Movie Mag, May 2006)
"It's not like Steven Spielberg is waiting with a script for me. I don't think I'll ever be offered a great international film in my lifetime, so I'd rather be a king here. Moreover, Indian cinema is the greatest in the world. But of course, after spending three months in LA, London, and New York I found that our cinema is a little exaggerated. To make a mark in the West we have to reach their level without losing our identity, culture or songs. I don't want to star in a Hollywood film, but want to make a film that crosses over universally." (Movie Mag, May 2006)
On trying to get Paheli (2005) an Oscar nomination: "There's a misreport here about our lobbying at the Oscars. The understanding that we have of the Oscars is very different from how it really is. Because Indian film, foreign films are not known, you're supposed to hire a PR company which we did. It's not as if you just go there, show your films, lobby and talk to them. You're not allowed to lobby as in you're not allowed to meet the Academy members, talk to them or even make a call to them. You just keep advertising in the 'For Consideration For Oscars' category. We took out full page ads in papers like Variety and Hollywood Reporter. The only good thing we did was that we advertised very frequently, it was promoted on the same scale as the biggest of films. We did it because we could afford it." (Movie Mag, May 2006)
"I felt Ashoka the Great (2001) should have been chosen for the Oscars. We had worked towards that. We had these international distributors for it. We were the first to actually release an Indian film internationally in traditionally non-Indian theaters. We spent a lot of money and lost a lot of money too. We were the first to put up boardings in London, in tube stations. We did speak to everyone who was anyone here, wondering if Asoka could go to the Oscars. But the one that got chosen was Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) which was even better. So we had no complaints. After that I didn't make any film for the foreign market." (Movie Mag, May 2006)
You must respect your seniors, bu never get intimidated by them. Winning should be a habit, not an option. The four Hs are important when you play to win --- honesty, humor, hard work and a bit of haraamipan.
I don't look at the figures that my movies make. The only figures I look at are girl's figures. (When asked to comment on what he felt about the figures his movies gross.)
Whenever I fail as a father or husband... a toy and a diamond always works.
If I talk to a girl, it's assumed that I'm having a scene with her. If I don't, then it's assumed that I'm gay.
I don't kiss on screen. Period.
There are only two Khans. Ghenghis Khan and Shahrukh Khan.
Sex is not required to sell my film. My name is enough.
You never win the silver, you only lose the gold.
I am very shy. If I am flying British Airways and the air hostess asks me two questions, and I don't understand her accent - I will go hungry for the entire flight.
The dream I chased, took me on a journey. A journey more rewarding then the goals, the achievements. When I look back it's like facing a million mirrors. Each reflection opens a window. A window to the world I've just discovered. The world I want to share with all of you.
If I am a role model, I must be the worst one in the world.
I've never had a girl make a pass at me.
Togetherness, passion, laughter, faith, trust and jealousy are the essential ingredients of love.
The collar-bone is my favorite part of the human body.
If asking me whether sleeping with X or Y gives the media pleasure, then so be it. It's a small price to pay.
I don't think I would have become an actor if Kajol wasn't a part of my films and life. And I don't think I would have continued acting if Rani wasn't a part of films either. I think perhaps in seventeen years they sum up my career as the most beautiful career.
Rani has looked her career best in Paheli. For myself, Aziz and Juhi, Rani is the only leading lady for our production house. She is the best actress we have had in I'd say the last 16 years!
[Speaking to Rani Mukerji on a talk show] I've known from the time you started. I'm very fond of you... I love you! We've done different kinds of roles together. Chalte Chalte I think was very interesting. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was interesting because you'd just started out... Its wonderful to see you evolve as an actor over the years and personally I do believe that Rani Mukerji is the best actress in the country in the last 16 years. I think she's absolutely wonderful!
[In the making of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai] I've worked with a few new comers [Mahima Choudary, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji] recently and Rani is the best of the lot. She lights up the screen with her appearance, she's very very beautiful and extremely talented, it was a pleasure working with her.

Mini Biography
Son of well known poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. He has a brother named Ajitabh. He completed his education from Uttar Pradesh and moved to Bombay to find work as a film star, in vain though, as film-makers preferred someone with a fairer skin, and he was not quite fair enough. But they did use one of his other assets - his deep baritone voice - which was used for narration and background commentary. He was successful in being cast in Saat Hindustani. He got his break in Bollywood after a letter of introduction from the then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi, as he was a friend of her son, Rajiv Gandhi. This is how Amitabh made an entry in Bollywood, starting with Zanjeer, co-starred with his future wife Jaya Bhaduri, and since then there has been no looking back.
He married Jaya Bhaduri, an actress in her own rights, and they had two children, Shweta and Abhishek. Shweta is married, lives a non-filmy life and has two children.
Being friends with Rajiv Gandhi, got him to decide to run for seat in the Congress from his hometown but had to leave midterm because of controversies, particularly after Rajiv and he were implicated in the now infamous "Bofors" case along with the U.K. based Hinduja Brothers.
After a four year break, he was back in the unsuccessful Mrityudaata (1997), a comeback which the actor wanted to forget. Critics written him off but his career was saved with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998). But four flops in 1999 and incurring debt of over 90 Crores rupees of his sinking company ABCL saw him at an all-time low. To make matters worse, after the defeat of the Congress party, Amitabh lost considerable political support, the opposition made him a target, and his credit rating deteriorated to such an extent that a leading nationalized bank, Canara Bank, sued him for outstanding loans. He did bounce back, presenting the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire called "Kaun Banega Crorepati?" (2000). After a series of hits with Mohabbatein (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001) and Baghban (2003) and Khakee (2004), this elderly Bachchan is showing no signs of slowing down and proving the critics wrong once again.
His son, Abhishek, is also an actor by his own rights.
Amitabh and Jaya were interested in getting Abhishek married to Karishma, the daughter of Babita and Randhir Kapoor, they went through a formal engagement, but later broke it off.
The former Miss World and Bollywood actress, Aishwarya Rai, and Abhishek, were formally engaged on Sunday January 14, 2007, at the Bachchan residence in Juhu, Bombay, with the marriage taking place at the Bachchan residence on April 20, 2007.
On November 16, 2011, he became a Dada (Paternal Grandfather) when Aishwarya gave birth to a daughter in Mumbai Hospital. He is already a Nana (maternal grandfather) to Navya Naveli and Agastye - Shweta's children.
He continues to be one of the busiest actors and singers in Bollywood as well as on TV, as can be seen from the commercials that he appears on, especially on Sahara One. Looks like there are no limits for this super-star and once the "Angry Young Man" of Bollywood.

Mini Biography
The trademark deep baritone voice, the tall, brooding persona, and intense eyes, made Amitabh Bachchan the ideal "Angry Young Man" in the 1975-84. The son of the late poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan, he was born in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. After completing his education from Sherwood College, Nainital, and Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, he moved to Calcutta to work for shipping firm Shaw and Wallace. Later, he moved to Bombay and struggled for a while to get his foot in the door of the Hindi film industry. The lanky, dark, and intensely brooding persona did not go down well with directors who were looking for wise-cracking, fair person - the trademark of the Indian hero in the 1960s. Starting with the low key Saat Hindustani, Bachchan struggled through many roles and was relegated at times to doing voice-overs and in one instance playing a deaf-mute. He broke through with Zanjeer (the Chain) in 1973 playing opposite his real-life love interest and future wife Jaya Bhaduri. His persona seemed apt for the post emergency period, capturing the resentment of underemployed youth and the increasing cult of violence. Bachchan reworked the image of the Hindi film hero with major hits like Deewar, Sholay, Trishul, Don and Shakti. Adapting former screen idol Dilip Kumar's mannerisms and adding his own flamboyance, he popularized the violent melodrama. He proved that he had an equal flair for tragedies (Deewar, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Shakti) and comedies (Chupke Chupke, Don, Naseeb, Amar Akbar Anthony) as well. His most memorable performance was as the renegade against a harsh society in Deewar. After Amar Akbar Anthony in which he reveled in the role of the Cathlolic bootlegger - he played similar "masala" roles, movies that required action, comedy, tragedy, and romance in one character. This had disastrous consequences later with movies disintegrating into Amitabh variety shows rather than plot-driven stories. Bachchan was dubbed the Superstar, sharing that title with Rajesh Khanna, from 1975 until the mid 1980s.From 1985-1999 he had many flops and people criticized for playing same roles repeatedly. At the height of his popularity he was injured in an accident while shooting for the film Coolie - long lines of people prayed for his recovery at the Breach Candy hospital, underscoring his mega-star status. He left films in 1985 to become a Member of Parliament from Allahabad constituency as a Congress party candidate, as a favor to his family friend Rajiv Gandhi - the new Prime MInister of India. A report of involvement in financial irregularities (of which he was completely cleared later) made him decide to step down as MP. His return in 1987 was lukewarm as the Hindi film industry had moved on and newer, younger heroes essayed the part of Angry Young Man with more conviction. Bachchan seemed to have lost his heart in making films as his later roles did not show the flicker of passion that had marked earlier efforts in the 1970s. In 1984, for the first time since 1976, his film flopped and in 1989 3 films could not recover their money (in the Hindi film industry a flop is a film that does not recover a distributor's price, not the producer's cost). A series of lackluster films in the 1990s pointed to a long overdue exit, common to many other stars. A seemingly well-thought out venture to start a production company ABCL landed him in immense debts. Astonishingly, he burst back with a double act: one, playing the stern patriarch and two, reinventing himself as a brand that in turn, could market anything. He began the latter by hosting the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Kaun Banegaa Crorepati). At sixty plus, Amitabh Bachchan is a greater icon than he was at the height of his popularity three decades ago.

Mini Biography
Amitabh Bachchan was born on October 11, 1942 in Allahabad. He is the son of late poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan did his schooling from Sherwood College, Nainital and later on pursued a degree in science from the Delhi University. His first job was in Shaw Wallace and later worked as a freight broker for a shipping firm called Bird and Co. But his destiny had something else to offer and it was the journey to stardom. He made his debut in the film Saat Hindustani (1969) which was directed by K.A. Abbas. Film failed on the box-office but Amitabh was noticed by film makers like Hrishikesh Mukherji and Sunil Dutt. Hrishikesh Mukherji (whom Amitabh treat as his Godfather),gave him a role in his two films, Anand and Guddi. Anand was the third film, which became a hit and he got best supporting actor filmfare award. Amitabh was getting the roles but they were not significant. Finally he got a chance to work in "Zanjeer", role for which he was not the first choice. Film turned out to be super-hit. By then a new avatar had emerged on silver screen, an "Angry young man". But this was his one aspect. He was a poet (Kabhi Kabhi), an decent professor (Kasme Vaade), a comedian (Chupke Chupke, Amar Akbar Anthony, Don), a dying lover (Mukaddar Ka Sikander). He did almost all kinds of roles. In 1973, after release of Zanjeer, Amitabh got married with Jaya Bhaduri. He became father at the time of release of Chupke Chupke. During the shooting of "Coolie" on 26th July 1982, he was injured and admitted to Breech Candy hospital. The whole nation prayed for his fast recovery and by the grace of God he was gifted with a new life. Mrs. Indira Gandhi, then P.M. of India, postponed her foreign trip and visited the hospital. After recovery Amitabh returned on silver screen, with Sharabi and Giraftar like hit movies. In the original script of "Coolie" Iqbal (Amitabh) had to die but Teji Bachchan asked Manmohan Desai to change it for her personal reasons. The last scene where he stands in the balcony and thank the people, was the real scene, a way to thank the people of India, "Main to chala gaya tha, laut aaya hoon to bus aapki duaon se...." Amitabh also tried his hand in politics in 1984 after the death of Mrs. Gandhi. He defeated the then called Chankya of the Indian politics, Hemvanti Nandan Bahuguna. But some how things went wrong and he got trapped in the dirty game of politics of anti-Rajiv Gandhi. Although during this period his classics "Main Azad Hoon" and "Agneepath" were released, but Amitabh was getting older. Amitabh decided to take a break in 1992, Khuda Gawah was the last release. He then launched ABCL which was a multi-faceted commercial enterprise. This was the major failure and he was surrounded by unthinkable debt. This is hard to imagine at that time how he survived but again he proved that he is not an ordinary man who live and die. With "Kaun Banega Crorepati" and "Mohabattein" he redefined his position in Indian cinema. Amitabh emerged again as a winner and slapped the critics who declared him "finished". Even in this age roles are written for him. Every film maker is dreaming to cast him in his/her film. He was declared as Star of the Millenium by BBC poll, by Stardust and even at the survey for statue at Madam Tusad. These are not mere coincident! May God bless him.

Personal Quotes
I have never really been confident about my career at any stage.
Everyone must accept "that we will age and age is not always flattering".
I wish I had time to learn all the languages of our country, I wish I knew how to play a musical instrument. There are many things that I feel I have missed out on.
(Referring to Abhishek Bachchan) "Like any other father I feel proud to see my son on the silver screen."
(When asked about his dancing with Shilpa Shetty in Lal Baadshah (1999)) "But I would dance with my daughter if I could. And if I can dance with Shilpa Shetty, then I will do that."
I have never been a superstar and never believed in it. For me if there was a superstar its Rajesh Khanna. His body of work, his sense of melody, involvement in music plus his fan following was really of a different league. He is the best superstar-cum-super-actor. The word "superstar" in the Indian film industry was for the first time coined for him.
The amount of things I have been through and the remarkable ways in which the body has reacted is just phenomenal. No wonder I became religious, because you don't know why something's happening to you and you don't know how you bounced back.
His thoughts on working in Hollywood: "You don't see Indians in Hollywood films around which a story can revolve. As soon as we have a social presence in your society, I am sure there will be many actors from our part of the world that will be acting in Hollywood films. I have always been a great admirer of Marlon Brando, Al Paccinno, Robert De Niro. I would love to walk into the frame, hold their briefcase!"
(2000) Whether it was in sets of Anand or Namak Haram, we never bickered or argued or tried to upstage one another in any manner. On the contrary Kaka does'n know this, but when I was working in Calcutta and keen to join films, the inspiration to join was Mr. Rajesh Khanna. Kaka had succeeded in Filmfare contest and I said "My God, here is an excellent opportunity where somebody is actually auditioned and here this gentleman who has made it and is doing so well." Then wonder of wonders in 2 years Hrishida asked to work with Kaka. It was a dream come true for me.
(1991) It was a dream come true for me because of there was this great admiration for Kaka and his phenomenal success. The hysteria that he evoked was witnessed for first time in Hindi Films. And we were all part of that hysteria that followed Kaka. I got famous purely because I was working with Rajesh Khanna. People came and asked me questions like "How does he look?" So I became very important, thanks to Kaka. I have always maintained that person who is my senior will always remain senior. I have never argued about billings because I don't think they mean anything. And I have had always greatest respect for Kaka.
Rajesh Khanna for me will remain the only superstar in true sense. He appeared in 153 films by 1991 - that is in a span of 25 years which already included 101 solo hero films and did only 21 multi star-cast films. Everyone knows his involvement in music of his films. He was so hardworking that each year he had minimum 3 films releasing and still managed to give 95 jubilee hits!! Hats off to him. My achievements are no-where near him. In-fact I did more multi star-cast films and less solo hero films than him. Once i got success in angry young man genre I had to stick to it and whenever I tried to do something different it was a failure so I stayed away from experimenting much. But Khanna never bothered about such things. In-spite of not working much after 1991 he has done 180 films and Am far behind him. I have highest regards for him since the 1965 when I heard about him then my respect only increased when I worked with him and till date I regard him as a greater actor.

Ashok Kumar introduced Dev as a leading man opposite Kamini Kaushal in 'Ziddi'. Thereafter there has been no looking back for the 'evegreen' Dev Anand, who went on to star in over 110 movies, spanning from 1946 through to 2005.
He is perhaps one of the few who dreamed of starlet Snehprabha Pradhan and had his dream come true when he got to not only meet her but also act with her. His other dream was of owning a car, a Hillman, was also fulfilled.
While filming opposite Singer-actress Suraiya, the boat capsized, Dev rescued her and in true Bollywood style both fell in love and wanted to get married. This did not happen as Suraiya's grandma strongly opposed this alliance. Suraiya, who acted with Dev in half a dozen movies, remained unmarried all her life.
In 1954 Dev met Mona Singh, a beauty queen from Simla, who was discovered by his brother, Chetan, and both got married her in a quiet ceremony in Russia where they were on a tour to screen 'Rahee' and 'Aandhiyan'. She adapted the screen name of Kalpana Kartik, and starred opposite her to-be-husband in all her movies. Both became parents in 1956 when Suneil was born. They also become parents to a daughter, Devina.
Dev is also known for introducing two of the most beautiful actresses to Bollywood, namely Zeenat Aman in 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' and Tina Munim in 'Des Pardes.
Not easily intimidated, Dev Anand, Shatrughan Sinha, Inder Sen Johar, Kishore Kumar were amongst the few that actually stood up against the authoritarian and oppressive regime of Indira Gandhi during the Emergency, while many in the opposition preferred to flee India to escape Mrs. Gandhi's wrath. He founded the now extinct National Party of India.
The Anand Brothers founded Navketan Films which is being administered by Suneil.
He was honored with the Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Palke awards during the years 2001 and 2002 respectively, in addition to winning three Filmfare Awards - one each for his performance in 'Kala Paani' and 'Guide'; and the third being the Lifetime Achievement award that was presented to him during 1991. During 1996 he received the 'Screen Videocon Lifetime Achievement' Award.
His autobiography 'Romancing with Life' was released during his 2007 birthday party. In February 2011 his 1961 hit 'Hum Dono' was colorized and re-released.
Due to health reasons Dev and Suniel had traveled to London, Britain and had booked a room in The Washington Hotel. His son was present with him when at 03:30 hours GMT on Sunday December 3, 2011, he passed away in his sleep after a sudden cardiac arrest. Paramedics were summoned but were unable to revive him. Mini Biography
Dilip Kumar is considered to be one of the greatest actors of Indian cinema. Starting his career in 1944, he has starred in some of the biggest commercially successful films from the late 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1980s. His performances have been regarded as the epitome of emoting in Indian Cinema. He was the first actor to receive a Filmfare Best Actor Award and holds the record for most number of Filmfare Awards won for that category. Though he has done all kinds of films - he balanced a wide variety of roles such as the intense Andaz (1949) with the swashbuckling Aan (1952), the dramatic Devdas (1955) with the comical Azaad (1955) and the historical romance Mughal E Azam (1960) with the social Ganga Jamuna (1961). In the 1970s roles dried up for Kumar and after 1976 he left films for a five year break. In 1981 he returned with a character role in the blockbuster film Kranti and continued his career playing central character roles in hits such as Shakti (1982), Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991). He has retired from the Indian Film Industry in 1998.
He was born Muhammad Yusuf Khan in Qissa Khawani Bazaar in Peshawar Pakistan in a Pashtun family of twelve children. His father Ghulam Sarwar was a fruit merchant and owned large orchards in Peshawar and Devlali in Maharashtra near Mumbai. The family relocated to Mumbai in 1930s and in the early 1940s Yusuf Khan moved to Pune and started off with his canteen business and supplying dry fruits.
There he was spotted by a leading actress of those years Devika Rani who was also the wife of the founder of Bombay Talkies Himanshu Rai and helped his entry into the Bollywood film industry. She also gave him the screen name of Dilip Kumar.
His first film Jwar Bhata, was released in 1944 which went unnoticed. In 1947 he shot to prominence with the film Jugnu which was his first major hit. In 1949, he co-starred with Raj Kapoor in the romantic melodrama film Andaz, which went to become a huge success and made him a star. Throughout the 1950s he was one of the biggest stars of Bollywood along with Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. He became known for playing tragic roles in popular films such as Deedar (1951), Amar (1954), Devdas (1955) and Madhumati (1958) which earned him the title of "Tragedy King".
He was also successful in playing lighthearted roles such as playing a swashbuckling peasant in Aan (1952) and a comic role in Azaad (1955). In 1960 he starred in the historical film Mughal-e-Azam which is as of 2008, the second highest grossing film in Hindi film history inflation adjusted in which he played the role of the Mughal crown-prince Jehangir the son of Akbar.
In 1961 he produced and starred in the hit Ganga Jamuna in which he and his Real Life brother Nasir Khan played the title roles. Despite the film success he did not produce any film after this. Dilip had a narrow brush with international fame in 1962 when British director David Lean offered him the role of Sherif Ali in his 1962 blockbuster, Lawrence of Arabia. However Kumar declined the part. The role eventually went to Omar Sharif the Egyptian actor. After a brief period of box office flops in the mid 1960s, he bounced back when he played a dual role of twins separated at birth in the film Ram Aur Shyam (1967) which was one of the biggest box office hits of the year. The success of Ram Aur Shyam spawned a number of remakes and imitators.
In the 1970s Kumar acted in fewer films as newer actors such as Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan had began to take the spotlight. Many of Kumar's films failed at the box office during this period and after the release of his 1976 film Bairaag in which he played triple roles, he took a five year break from acting.
He made a comeback in 1981 with the multi-starrer Kranti which was the biggest hit of the year. He went onto play character roles as an elderly family patriarch or a police officer in a string of box office hits including Shakti (1982) in which he starred alongside the reigining superstar of the time Amitabh Bachchan , Vidhaata (1982), Mashaal (1984) and Karma (1986). In his last major successful film, Saudagar (1991) he appeared alongside another legendary actor Raaj Kumar after three decades since they last appeared together in Paigham (1959). In 1992 he won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
In 1996 he was attached to make his directorial debut with a film titled Kalinga but the film was shelved. In 1998 he made his last film appearance to date in the box office flop Qila where in a rare form he played a villainous role. He has since retired from the film industry although he has continued to receive film offers in recent years but the films have either been shelved due to his indifferent health or because he refused them.
Dilip Kumar's younger brother Nasir Khan was also an actor and appeared opposite him in Ganga Jamuna (1961) and Bairaag (1976) as well as some other films in the late 1940s and 1950s. His career was not as successful however. He died in 1974. Nasir Khan's son Ayub Khan is also currently an actor in the industry. Nasir Khan's wife was 1950s actress Begum Para who recently made a comeback to films after 50 years in the film Saawariya in 2007.
Dilip Kumar married actress and "beauty queen" Saira Banu in 1966 when he was aged 44 and she was 22. At the time, gossip columnists predicted doom for the high-profile couple, but the union has been one of the longest lasting marriages in Bollywood.
